History

The Garden of Remembrance was created during the burial reforms of the mid-19th century and began life as a Victorian burial ground. Like many burial grounds of this period, its role and visibility changed over time, and it experienced periods of uncertainty as patterns of burial, land use, and local governance evolved.

By the late 1960s, several decades after burials had moved to the current village cemetery on Daisy Lane, the gravestones were relocated and the Garden of Remembrance was formed as a managed green space.

In November 2025, St John the Baptist Church hosted an exhibition exploring the history of the Garden of Remembrance and the stories connected to it. Further detail from this research and exhibition will be added here as the digital archive continues to develop.
